In Australia

- Australians throw out about 14 million tonnes of rubbish each year. *00/kg/person/year.

In Victoria

- the cost to dispose victorias rubbish is about $300 million a year.
In June 1992, Victoria passed the environment protection resource recovery act. The goal is to reduce the amount weight of waste going to land fill by half by the year 2000. (compared to1991/92 level of about 2.5 million tonnes).
- 3.8KG of house hold garbage is thrown away by each person every week. (about 200KG/person/year/)
- since1993, the amount of garbage, by weight, decreased by 9.5%.
- in 1994, 5.6MILLIOM tonnes of garbage were produced, 2.1 million tonnes (40%) were recycled.
- about half of house old garbage is made up of food and garden waste. Most of this could be composed or mulched.
- 17% of the household waste is recycled in kerbside collections. A further 23% of house hold garbage could be recycled.

- 2.2 million tonnes of solid domestic and commercial waste are thrown away every year.

- up to 1993, the volume of garbage increased by 2.5% a year.
- the cost to collect and dispose of domestic and commercial garbage is $140 million/year.
- 22% of household garbage is made up of packaging.
